Fall Family Traditions: Creating Lasting Memories at Home

The Magic of Fall Family Traditions

Happy fall y'all! Is this saying cringe-worthy yet? LOL. The time has come—my favorite time of year! Who’s with me?! The leaves begin to fall, the air becomes crisp, pumpkin spice lattes are back on the menu (yes, I’m that chick), and all the holiday decorations come out. Being a working step-mom of three, I can understand that keeping up with your workload and finding time for holiday bonding experiences can be a challenge. In this blog post, we will explore family-friendly fall activities to do with your friends or family!

Cozy Movie Nights

Pick a night when the weather feels nice and chilly, and create a cozy atmosphere in your family room or home theater with plush blankets, warm apple cider, and popcorn. The more snacks the better!  Choose a classic fall-themed movie that everyone will enjoy, such as "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" or "Hocus Pocus." The Halloweenetown series has been my go-to since I was a kid. Bonus points if you dress up for movie night: sweaters, movie-themed outfits, or matching are fun ideas.

Fall Baking Extravaganza

Gather the family and whip up some fall-inspired treats, like pumpkin bread or apple pie. Not only does this create a fun and interactive activity, but it also fills your home with the yummy scents of fall. Baking is one of my favorite hobbies and my stepkids LOVE to bake with me. Have you ever seen the movie Waitress, starring Keri Russell? The main character Jenna is always baking pies with the craziest recipes—it always gets me in the baking mood! I encourage you to either make some family classics or develop your own new invention that can become a family staple for years.

Crafting a Fall-Inspired Art Gallery

Set up a designated crafting area in your home with fall-themed art supplies, such as colorful construction paper, paints, and fallen leaves. Encourage creativity as each family member creates their unique autumn-inspired masterpiece. Hang the finished artwork throughout your home, transforming it into a personalized fall art gallery. On the other hand, if you have an existing gallery wall and can swap out images, you can add fun fall-inspired images for the season.

Board Game Tournaments

GAME NIGHT! My family is a big fan of board games, TV game shows, and everything in-between. I challenge you to designate a space in your family or living room for a friendly board game competition. Choose a selection of age-appropriate games and enjoy an evening of laughter and healthy competition as you challenge one another to become the ultimate champion.

Homemade Halloween Costumes

Get creative this Halloween by designing homemade costumes as a family. I know, I know the kids will want to be one of their favorite characters (even you), but you can do both! Transform your living room into a costume workshop, and let each family member's imagination run wild as they create their unique look. This not only encourages creativity but also provides an opportunity for unforgettable memories and lots of laughter.

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Last but not least, PUMPKIN CARVING! Host a pumpkin carving contest with your family. Each person can design and carve their unique jack-o'-lantern, display them outside, or have a friendly competition and pick a winner! Another perk of pumpkin carving... you get to bake the yummy pumpkin seeds afterward!
